080618 - Manizales :: Todo llega a su fin… | Everything comes to an end…

GRACIAS…. TOTALES!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

… Many times this phrase fills us up with satisfaction, some others with melancholy, others with anxiety and preoccupation and also sometimes with tranquility. Maybe for me the end of my adventure filled me up with a little of each one of this feelings: Satisfaction of having finished a trip one year and a half ago unimaginable and have traveled over two wheels more than 70000 kilometers across 18 of the 20 countries on the continental Americas; melancholy to not be able to continue (at least immediately) traveling around this world that in each corner has a surprise to amaze us; anxiety and preoccupations for the short term future, the reinsertion to the every day life and social interaction commonly known as “Normal Life”, and personal tranquility of knowing that one of the riskiest decisions I have ever taken ended up being with out any doubt the most important one and one that has substantially increased my personal, intellectual and spiritual growth… and obviously tranquility to my parents that even though never criticized my trip neither resisted to my riding across the new world, they always had in their minds a constant preoccupation regarding my well being during this adventure.

The neighboring republic of Venezuela was the last of the countries to be ridden before finally arriving to my beloved Colombia. Due to some time constrains, specially my friend Manolo’s need to get to Bogotá and due to some inconveniences we had in regards to the immigration papers to this country, we decided to ride across Venezuela as fast as we could leaving the task of getting to know its territory in detail for a later opportunity. Anyway it was more than 2000 Kmts we rode in this country and a good idea we got about the spectacular landscapes it has to offer, starting from the Gran Sabana in the south on the border with Brazil, to the Andean region on the border with Colombia going through the center and the extensive prairies that accompany the Orinoco to its delta. Regarding the coast we did not see anything, but I will for sure come back, probably in a post-Cahvez time when the bilateral relations between our countries are calmer and the country politics more in accordance with my personal opinions.

Getting to Colombia is always an experience full of emotions, is clear that in this region we are all Latin, but it does not stop impressing me how a simple bridge over a river can separate strong differences of ideology, language, culinary, social and obviously politic customs. How good is to be served by a nice Colombian waiter, but how bad is to have to deal with the confusing Colombian custom laws where once again they could not process a temporal importation for my motorcycle and forced me to ride as a motorized renegade across the Colombian eastern Andean peaks.

The day we came into Colombia and after spending all the afternoon between insurance shopping and unsuccessful custom processes we made at the end of the day and in the middle of an intense rainfall to the town of Pamplona in “Norte de Santander”. We slept again in Colombia, the joy was breathable in the air, even though a little bit contaminated by the intense smells of sweat and humidity that already had a couple of weeks of accumulation in our clothes since the time we left the Brazilian coast. I have to accept the smelliest of all were mine and were close to be thrown away by Manolo and Andres who in between bad jokes had some fun with my aromatic clothing… as if theirs smell to roses.

Very early next day and in the middle of an intense Andean freezing temperature we started our last day of traveling. The three of us crossed the high mountain to the city of Bucaramanga where Manolo and I said bye to Andres since he would keep following the route through the Magdalena valley to the central coffee region while we would keep going over the east mountain chain until the capital of the country. In the middle of the road we run into a group of motorcyclists from whom one of them yelled my name. We stopped to happily find out it was a group of friends from my hometown Manizales, Mincho, Kokorico and Julian Restrepo with his girlfriend among others. The coincidence not only shocked me but also filled me of joy as I met exactly on the day I was ending my trip and in the middle of the road with Julian, one of the main inspirations to this adventure, since he had made the same trip around South America one year before I started mine. An excellent encounter.

After 9 hours of riding we made it to Bogotá, the trip was officially over and after a warm good bye with Manolo who would keep going to his house I arrived at my sister’s house where I was being waited for. Nothing better than a family welcoming after a trip this long, I was received by my parents, my sister, my brother in law and my nephews, a very emotional moment full of hugs, kisses and lost of love.

To my home town I arrived one week later to celebrate mothers’ day and reencounter with family and friends I have not seen for quite a while. The motorcycle stayed interned on the Suzuki shop in Pereira where a full maintenance was conducted including putting the engine all apart and replacing of all the wore parts in order to send it to the united states ready for at least another 100.000 kilometers of adventures.

The attentions, good comments and congratulations have not been low in my Manizales, it is really grateful to be able to set the example in front of the society that saw you grow up that everything is possible, the world is big and that if you decide there will never be limits for the exploration neither for the dreams you set to make real. I even got interviewed for a full page on a Sunday edition of my hometowns newspaper (La Patria)… It feels nice to share experiences!!!

Now it is all about enjoying a good time with family and friends while I enjoy the nice things my county has always offered. There are a couple options for the future and while they get settled I have no more choice that to keep being relaxed… I will have to return to a life more in accordance with social standards, but that does not worry me, each step in your life has to be lived as a challenge and be accomplished with will and determination, I am almost certain that in the future I will experience again and hopefully several times adventures like the one I have just finished and therefore the joy and curiosity about the world are today more alive than ever.

There were 18 countries: United States, México, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil and Venezuela. Each one with landscapes, cities, towns and marvelous people that made of each traveling day a special moment. It has to be recognized although that some places impressed me more than others and became one of those I hope I can visit again sometime in the future… in the category of natural landscapes I have to mention The Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, Grand Canyon in the United States, The Andean Peaks of the southern Patagonia, The Tayrona Park in Colombia, The Titicaca Lake in the border between Peru and Bolivia, Jericoacoara and the majestic Amazon river in Brazil and The Iguazu falls in Argentina; in the category of big cities I will never forget Buenos Aires, Chicago, New York and Rio; in regards to old towns I have to recall San Cristóbal de las Casas and Guanajuato in México, Antigua in Guatemala, Salento in Colombia, Cusco in Perú and Copacabana in Bolivia and when it comes to ruins and pre-Columbian monuments toping the list are the great Machu Pichu in Peru, The Tikal ruins in Guatemala and Teotihuacan in México city. Better said the list could continue for pages non stop, but in a short summary the places mentioned above are maybe those that most impacted me during this adventure.

I have nothing left to say but thanks, the list can become too long and still there will be people out of it that gave me support, energy and followed me during all my trip… so, I will leave it in terms as general as possible: To my parents, siblings and remaining family, that even though in reality never had a vote in the decision I took about making this trip, it always gave me tranquility to know that in between fears and preoccupations I always counted with their support and that as the trip progressed and the list of good experiences grew, in a similar way their satisfaction and pride for the life I was living also grew. To my workmates at Nokia, who supported me on the decision I took and although many expressed the sadness to see me leave, their expression of joy was always stronger to go out to the world and do something many of them said they wanted but could not achieve. To all my friends, especially those who received me in their houses during my riding and gave me the opportunity to share with them live and direct my traveling experiences. To all of you, known and unknown that filled my web page with messages and that in between jokes, comments and reflections helped keeping my mindset full of joy and my will to continue intact… better said… thanks to all! I can not recall of a single bad experience of disgust hatred or dissatisfaction in this trip, and I know it was not only due to my attitude and positivism but also to all the good energy and push I always received from you.

I will close then like a famous singer who I was mistaken for once in Lima as I walked through the streets with my long and crazy hair and a pair of huge sunglasses that covered half my face: Master Cerati…. GRACIAS…. TOTALES!
