No se si se pueda atribuir al calentamiento global o simplemente a un invierno tardío, pero la realidad es que el mes de Abril ha presentado un clima bien extremo e inestable para gran parte de los Estados Unidos. Esto lo se ya que mi canal preferido ha sido el “Weather Channel” desde que salí de la florida y he podido ver como el clima trae fuertes lluvias, vientos y nevadas a los sitios que he visitado ya sea días antes de yo llegar o inmediatamente después de pasar por ahí, mejor dicho he corrido con suerte y aunque las temperaturas han estado bajas, he disfrutado de días soleados a medida que atravieso el país de Este a Oeste. Pero bueno, tarde que temprano tenia que experimentar algo del implacable clima en sangre propia, y hoy ha sido el día. Salí de Jackson, Wyoming en una mañana gris pero seca y pase por el sureste de Idaho para entrar luego a Utha y encontrarme con una fuerte nevada, con la fortuna de estar cerca de un pueblo llamado Logan a unos 140 km al norte de Salt Lake City, donde después de parar a almorzar y esperar por mas de una hora para solo ver como la nieve caía cada vez mas fuertemente, decidí manejar al motel mas cercano y alquilar un cuarto. Un día corto de ruta, pero mejor seguro y caliente que congelándome y arriesgándome bajo este fuerte clima. Como me dijo la recepcionista del motel, una señora ya de edad con un carácter bien particular: “ahí, me tranquiliza que se quede acá, hace poco un conocido mío perdió el control de su moto en una nevada como estas y se mato!!!”… que tal la señora… Bueno, ahora con más ganas disfrutare el día de descanso esperando que mañana salga el sol de nuevo.
Ha sido una semana de Parques Naturales y vastos paisajes a través del bien conocido viejo Oeste. Después de un agradable par de días en la ciudad de Chicago, continué mi viaje al Oeste con miras hacia el famoso parque Yellowstone en la esquina Noroeste del estado de Wyoming. Fueron tres días de largo viaje para desafortunadamente encontrarme con la noticia de que todas las rutas a Yellowstone están todavía cerradas por temporada y que no me quedaba mas de otra que rodearlo por los valles del sureste para encontrarme nuevamente con mi ruta deseada mas al sur en parque Nacional “Grand Teton”. Tendré que volver en otra oportunidad para conocer Yellowstone, pero el tiempo no fue perdido, conocí lugares espectaculares en esta ruta que me dejan realmente satisfecho: Desde los valles del rió Mississipi que al Norte divide Illinois de Iowa hasta los imponentes Gran Tetones al sur de Yellowstone en Wyoming, pasando por las cataratas Sioux, los Badlands, el monte Rushmore (el de las caras de los presidentes) y las lomas negras (Black Hills) en Dakota del Sur y la torre del Diablo, las montañas Bighorn y Jackson Hole en Wyoming. El paisaje en estos sitios es simplemente llenador y la vida salvaje se puede apreciar personalmente incluso en esta época del año. En verano si que debe ser increíble… una ruta mas para recomendar.
Bueno, mientras escribo esto veo que para de nevar, espero que sea permanente y que mañana el tiempo este nuevamente de mi lado para continuar al sur hacia Salt Lake City, la ultima gran ciudad que pienso visitar antes de volver a California, pero no sin antes conocer el desierto de Salt Lake, el parque nacional Zion y cruzar el desértico nevada por la zona 52 para entrar a California por el parque Yosemite y en busca del pacifico seguir hacia San Francisco.

I’m not sure it can be blamed on global warming or simply on a late winter, but reality is that the month of April has presented some extreme and unstable weather for great part of the United States. This I know since my favorite station has been the Weather Channel since I left Florida, being able to see how weather brings strong rains, winds and snow storms to the places I have visited either days before I arrive or immediately after I depart, better said, I have been lucky and despite the cold temperatures I have enjoyed of nice sunny days as I go through the states from east to west. But well, sooner or later I had to experience personally the strong weather conditions, today has been the day. I left Jackson, Wyoming in a gray but dry morning and went through southeastern Idaho to then get into Utah and find a strong snow fall, with the fortune of being really close to the town of Logan, where after having lunch and waiting for more than an hour to just see how the snow keep falling stronger as time passed, I decided to drive to the closest motel and get a room. A short day of riding, but better safe and warm than freezing and risking it under the strong conditions. As the old lady with a very special character in the front desk told me: “ha, It relaxes me that you decided to stay, not long ago I man I knew lost the control of his bike in a snow fall like this and he died!!!”… what a character… Well, now I will enjoy even more my vacation day hopping tomorrow the sun will shine again.
It has been a week of Natural Parks and vast landscapes through the well known old west. After a couple of enjoyable days in Chicago, I continued my trip west towards the famous Yellowstone National Park at the Northwestern corner of the state of Wyoming. Three days of long riding to unfortunately find that all routes to Yellowstone are still closed for the season and had no other option but to surround it through the southeastern valleys to find again my desired route more to the south at the Grand Teton National Park. I will have to come back someday to really know Yellowstone, but the time was not wasted, I got to know spectacular places in this route that leaves me really satisfied: From the Valleys of the Mississippi river that in the north divide Illinois from Iowa to the overwhelming Grand Teton on the south side of Yellowstone in Wyoming, going through Sioux Falls, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills in South Dakota and Devils Tower, Bighorn mountains and Jackson Hole in Wyoming. The landscape in these places is spirit filling and the wildlife can be experienced personally even at this time of the year. In summer it must be incredible… one more route to recommend.
As I write this I can see it stopped snowing, I hope is permanent and that tomorrow weather plays on my side again to continue south towards Salt Lake City, the last big city I plan to visit before returning to California, but not before visiting the Salt Lake Desert, Zion National park and crossing the deserted Nevada through Zone 52 to enter California via Yosemite and in search of the pacific continue to San Francisco.
